According to Ayurveda – the oldest medicine in the world – the entire universe is based on the existence and coexistence of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. All these elements combine in varying proportions to form both the animate and inanimate world. In the human body, these five elements occur in three basic configurations, which are then called doshas: Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire), Kapha (water and earth).
All three doshas are present in every person in varying proportions. Usually, one of them is dominant, and it's rare for all three to be present in identical proportions. Depending on which dosha is predominant, what is known as the innate constitution (determined at the moment of conception) is established, in other words, the physical type of a given person, the so-called. nature.
Most often, one of the doshas dominates the others, so for example, someone might be of a vata, pitta, or kapha constitution. It also very often happens that two elements predominate, and someone can be of a vata-pitta constitution, or for example, vata-kapha, etc.
Cotton
In a very broad generalisation, air and space elements predominate in Vata types. Vata is responsible for movement and locomotion, which is why such people are usually very energetic, active, rather slim and tall, they like to talk a lot, have plenty of ideas, often start new topics and don't finish them, they are very inventive and creative, loquacious, but unfortunately, anxiety and fear often accompany them. Their skin is often dry, hair is thin and brittle, and nails are fragile.
Pitta
Pitta is fire, thus people with this dominant dosha could be described as having a fiery temperament. They would be characterised by high energy, inventiveness, leadership skills, and strong personalities, all due to the strong fire that predominates in them. Such individuals are quite loud, easily irritated, and prone to conflict. The skin of people with this constitution is sensitive, prone to broken capillaries, often becomes red, is covered with freckles and various moles, and easily suffers sunburn, tolerating high temperatures poorly. Hair is usually thick, often curly and red. The prevailing skin issues for these individuals are a tendency towards inflammation and blemishes.
Kapha
Kapha, on the other hand, is responsible for growth. People with a predominance of kapha are often of stocky build, tend to be overweight and retain water, are quite slow and lazy, but are very steadfast in their feelings, full of love, and have the ability to remember information for many years. The skin of a kapha will be quite thick, well-moisturised and lubricated, does not wrinkle so quickly, but tends to be oily and have enlarged pores; hair is thick and dense.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, body care is tailored to the constitutional type, and the primary consideration is the dosha that predominates over the others. I will expand on this topic in my next blog post.
