When I meet women in counseling sessions or seminars, I like to look at them and see where the changes in their faces are coming from. Very often this is due to body posture i bad habits, leaning over the computer screen for many hours or incorrect body position during sleep.

Incorrect body position — what characterizes it and what should you pay attention to?

Poor posture is a disease of the civilization of our time. Lack of movement, incorrect models, sedentary work, slouching while walking and driving, lifting, but also frequent use of a mobile phone-all this affects the health of our spine, the appearance of the figure, but also the appearance of the body. face appearance and correct bite placement. 

On the one hand, from childhood we hear how important it is in life to move and maintain the correct posture of the body. Theory, theory. Unfortunately, if we don't consciously look after our figure, we can quickly get imperfections that will affect the entire body.

What characterizes proper body posture?

Correct body posture this is the one in which the parts of the body are harmoniously located relative to each other. 

  • The head, of course, should be placed straight, its tip should be directed upwards, and the line going to the ears should coincide with the line of the shoulders.
  • Any natural curvature of the spine, such as lordosis or kyphosis, should be preserved without indentations and sagging. 
  • The chest should be open, but it should not be pushed forward. 
  • Similarly, the pelvis-should rest on the femoral heads, positioned naturally, without pushing forward or pulling back

If in the process of growing up, studying, relaxing, or growing up and working, you fix the wrong habits — over time, you will notice changes not only in your figure, but also on your face. They often result in unwanted aesthetic problems that are difficult to fix (definitely better prevented).

Popular malocclusion and incorrect body position

The way the head and neck are supported, both day and night, affects the jaw system and occlusion, i.e. proper contact between the upper and lower teeth. 

Incorrect body position can cause bite defects such as:: 

  • rear bite, i.e. retraction of the lower jaw in relation to the teeth of the upper jaw, 
  • snack, which consists in overlapping the lower teeth with the upper ones.

Rear bite this can cause the silhouette to lean forward, with a sunken chest, neck stretched forward, and head tilted back. Fixing this position leads to a retraction of the lower jaw.

This also works in the other direction. If you have a problem with an excessive tilt of the head and a decrease in cervical lordosis, you may see a protrusion of the lower jaw forward, that is snack.

If you want to better understand the effect of silhouette on the jaw system and malocclusion — make a few quiet movements with your head back and forth, opening your mouth slightly. Watch carefully what happens to the lower jaw as the head moves back and forth.

Did you feel the change in the position of your lower jaw during your workout? Have you noticed that when the head is tilted, the lower jaw moves gently forward? The same thing happens when you spend hours leaning over your phone or laptop. This is worth monitoring. 

Malocclusion is not just about the aesthetics of the face and smile

Unfortunately malocclusion associated with abnormal occlusion significantly affects the appearance of the face changes that occur with age. Over time, incorrectly strained muscles can be reflected on the face in the form of strong furrows on the cheeks, truncated beard, asymmetry, loss of youth angle (angle between chin and neck), unfavorable change in the oval face, double chinand even wrinkles on the neck. 

However, malocclusion is not just a matter of facial and smile aesthetics. Incorrect posture and abnormalities in the masticatory organ, they contribute to numerous health problems. They affect how we survive and ingest food. They can also manage m.in to destabilize the skull, which is connected by a network of ligaments and muscles to our lower jaw. 

In addition, abnormal occlusion contributes to disorders such as:

  • sleep apnea, 
  • sinusitis,
  • recurring ear infections,
  • headaches and frequent migraines, 
  • bruxism, or gnashing of teeth,
  • perceived tension in the neck, neck and face muscles, 
  • sensitivity of teeth, crushing and abrasion of enamel. 

Studies have also shown that congenital or acquired malocclusion also affects body growth. 

How to maintain a good posture? What to do if you find a problem

Do you see any of the above symptoms? It is recommended to consult your doctor and physical therapist. In addition, it is necessary to constantly monitor the position of your body and correct bad habits.

Daily physical activity provides a lot, which usually helps to negate the consequences of a minor postural neglect.

If you see changes on your face, remember that it's never too late to get orthodontic treatment. Of course, the fastest results can be obtained by correcting the bite at a young age, when the bones are still pliable. But if the defect appeared only after a while, nothing is lost. In any case, you should start by identifying the cause of the violation. For treatment to be effective, it is necessary to use preventive measures that will prevent relapses.
